Library Book Due Friday

First grade homework is all about establishing routines. Homework will include learned/high frequency words, reading log, and sharing each week. Start now by deciding upon a regular time for you to do your homework each day.

Choose a special spot that will be all yours for homework. Make sure it is away from distractions like TV and noisy siblings. It should be quiet and comfortable for you.

We have taken great care to make sure that homework is meaningful this year. Please take the time each day to read and have great conversations about the reading each evening.

December Newsletter

Class News:

I hope that each of you enjoyed time with family and friends over the Thanksgiving break.

December is going to be a busy month.  New concepts will be introduced, and we will be having lots of fun this month too.  I know how excited the kids are for the holidays. Our winter holiday party will be Friday, December 20th at 10:30 a.m.

Please make sure your children are at school each day in the coming weeks. I will be assessing students and preparing report cards for the 1st Semester, which will be sent home on Friday January 17th.

As the rainy season is upon us, please remember to send students to school in athletic shoes on Mondays and Tuesdays so they can easily participate in PE. When it rains PE is moved indoors and it makes it hard to participate in games when wearing rubber rain boots. Thank you.

Reading Workshop:

The class is doing a fantastic job in reading workshop.  It is so exciting to watch students grow as readers.  The excitement in their eyes when they begin to see their progress is so rewarding.  Please remember to talk with your children about their reading at home. There is a list of questions in the front of their reading log you can use to help facilitate a conversation about their comprehension of the story.

We will be concentrating on comparing and contrasting the characters, setting, and endings in several different Gingerbread Stories over the next few weeks.

Math:

We have started Module 3, which will focus on data and measurement. The math pages will look a little bit different for the next couple of weeks. I sent home the homework packet yesterday for the entire unit. I don’t suggest they work through this all at one time. I will continue to have students bring home the problem set page each day, so you can see what we are working on in class.

Holidays Around the World:

This month we will be traveling around the world and learning about different countries and their traditions and ways of celebrating winter holidays.

Homework:

Please remember to take time each night to help your child write in the book titles in their reading log. They receive credit for each night they read. I have had several reading logs turned in blank. The reading log is required homework.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a safe and happy New Year!
